IKEA Foundation

The IKEA Foundation is an independent philanthropic organization based in the Netherlands, legally and operationally distinct from the IKEA retail business. It focuses its funding on fighting global warming and improving livelihoods, organizing its strategy around three core climate domains: Energy; Land, Food & Forests; and Buildings & Transport, alongside emergency humanitarian response. Total cumulative funding reported exceeds €3 billion. The Foundation operates primarily by forming long-term, strategic partnerships with established NGOs, INGOs, multilateral agencies, and intermediary research organizations rather than funding individual researchers or uninvited projects.

El Niño weather event (2026)

The IKEA Foundation is committing €15 million to help communities prepare for and respond to the severe impacts of the expected 2026 El Niño event, including flooding, food insecurity, and displacement.

“A major El Niño weather event is expected to bring severe flooding, food insecurity and displacement to communities already facing the effects of a warmer climate. IKEA Foundation is committing €15 million to the Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, GiveDirectly and Start Network. The funding will help communities prepare before the most severe impacts hit and support faster crisis response where it’s needed.”
